Dax Shepard Relapses

Dax Shepard is known by many as a jovial, personable actor and comedian. Starring in the hit sitcom, Parenthood, Shepard quickly became a household name, especially with his famous wife and actress, Kristen Bell. While Shepard is certainly known and recognized for his on-screen roles, he is also a beacon of hope for many revering addicts.

Shepard has always been quite vocal about his 16 years of sobriety. In the past, he struggled with an alcohol and cocaine addiction that led him down a path he was not proud of. However, he has truly turned his life around in sobriety, dedicating himself to being a father, husband, and important member of the sober community.

Those who follow Shepard were quite surprised to hear about his recent relapse. With a history of proud sobriety, he shocked many who tuned into this popular podcast “Armchair Expert” last week when he revealed he had a slip-up. While he did not touch cocaine or alcohol, he did admit to his new struggles with an opioid addiction.

Coming To Terms With His Setback

Following a motorcycle accident, Shepard began self-medicating with the painkiller Vicodin to treat the pain from his shoulder injury. Instead of retrieving a prescription from a doctor, Shepard admits to engaging in “shady” behavior as he purchased the painkillers on his own.

Shepard said, “I was taking, you know, eight 30s a day, and I know that’s an amount that’s going to result in a pretty bad withdrawal.” He continued during his podcast, “and I start getting really scared, and I’m starting to feel really lonely. And I just have this enormous secret.”

Before coming clean to his wife, Shepard attempted to wean himself off of the drugs, but this proved to be too difficult to achieve. Finally, he sat his wife down and told her everything as he gave her the rest of the pills.

Luckily, Shepard was able to recognize the opioid addiction quickly and can start his sober journey again. Announcing his addiction struggles to his large podcast following was important to him, as he stated that it was “an episode I hoped I’d never have to record, but one I felt I owed to all the beautiful Armcheries who have been on this ride with me for the last couple years.”

We are all pulling for Shepard as he begins his difficult, yet honorable journey of maintaining his sobriety. Good luck to him as he fights his disease openly and honestly.
